ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY NIGERIA

Abstract

The essence of this paper is to call on Nigerians to seriously promote practices for sustainable growth and development. A situation exists in Nigeria and other developing countries where activities like deforestation, farming etc and the burning of fossil fuels (the use of fire wood) have reduced the process of photosynthesis by leaving higher level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and whose effect leads to global warming or climate change. Our appeal in this presentation is the slogan “development without destruction”. The concepts of sustainable development, environmental education, natural resources and forest protection management, pollution and loss of biodiversity, mitigation and adaptation strategies to forestall environmental degradation and a call for concerted effort in environmental protection and conservation shall form the focus of discussion and a passionate call so as not to jeopardise the chances of future generation of Nigerians.
